Attitudes toward sustainability have certainly changed in the last few years. Since Al Gore’s landmark speech, featured in the documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, people are more conscious of the environmental consequences of their individual and collective actions.

The Group is actively working on ways of reducing its environmental impact. Intelligent logistics planning – ensuring trucks are always travelling full – is just one example of how we are working smarter to reduce costs and minimise our carbon footprint.

Taking a wider industry view, construction companies are beginning to incorporate Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles into their working models. Our opinion is that demolition is the first step in sustainable building – avant-garde thinking in an industry historically known for creating waste. The formation of the
Green Building Council of New Zealand and the introduction of the Green Star NZ rating system is a welcome addition to the construction industry landscape. As a member and industry contractor, Ward Group has first-hand understanding of how demolition, recycling and the use of recycled materials can contribute points towards a Green Star NZ rating. The definition of “waste” has changed considerably over the years. Since inception, Ward Group has constantly sought new ways to utilise waste materials; finding novel end-uses for a wide range of recovered and recycled materials. In 2007 alone, Ward Group recycled 250,000 tonnes of concrete. Recycling is a fundamental part of what we do. The ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ philosophy permeates our thinking and is a driving philosophy behind our business processes. Read more about the use of recycled materials for building projects.

The Groups Value Chain illustrates how the group recycles an impressive quantity of waste material from demolition sites. Some of our projects have reached recycling targets of up to 96% of salvaged material by weight. The organisations structure allows us to achieve this by integrating the capabilities of its many specialist business units.

Ward Group has the ability to process waste material both on and off-site. This is often a critical factor in site management during the demolition and recovery phase of a project. Ward bins are used, allowing separation of recovered materials at source. Custom designed attachments means Ward can achieve greater rates of recovery – something that the organisation is constantly striving to improve.
